The SugarFields Story
For many years, sugar was a highly valuable commodity in Britain and huge fortunes were made importing it from the West Indies. However, due to the levying of high duties, the illegal import and distribution of sugar also proved to be a very lucrative trade.
Locals tell the tale of a farmer who, looking to make a handsome profit, harboured a large cache of sugar, filling his barn from floor to rafters. But, before he was able to benefit from his valuable hoard, he received word that Customs and Excise were hot on his trail.
Keen to evade discovery, the farmer devised an ingenious plan. That night, under cover of darkness, he scattered the precious store of sugar across his fields. Armed with pitchforks, friends and neighbours toiled through the night, turning the sweet, white crystals into the soil until no trace of the sugar remained.
The next morning, as dawn broke, the farmer ushered his cattle into the fields.
When Customs and Excise Officers arrived at the farm, confident of seizing the sweet stash, they could find no evidence of the farmer's allegedly scurrilous activities and could only look on in bemusement at the cows, grazing with contentment, in the sweet, luscious fields.
Perhaps that is why, even today, the cows raised on local fields are considered by some to produce the sweetest, creamiest milk in Cheshire!
